Driver Profiles - Jeff Gordon 1985

The following picture is by Joe Morgan and driver profile was extracted from the Program for the  3rd. Annual Cal Expo Winter Indoor RACE, 1985.

Jeff Gordon, Vallejo, CA:

At 13 years old, Jeff hasQT1984.jpg (10534 bytes) established himself as one of the premier quarter midget drivers in the country. He owns 37 standing track records from California to Indiana, and you would need a calculator to log his main event wins. Never one to shy away from competition, Jeff has raced and won against the finest drivers in the United States.

He has been a Western States Champion on six occasions in five different classes. He was the Light Modified and Light B Champion in the 1980 Firecracker 500. In 1980, Jeff was the overall points champion in the Light A class in the rugged California Monza Series. 1982 was the year, however, because it was then that he won his only Grand National. During that race at Baylands, Jeff set fast time and so completely dominated the rest of the Light B field on his way to victory, it was clear he was in a class by himself. Not surprisingly, Jeff was also the Light A Champion at last years Winter Indoor and returns to defend his crown. Keep your eyes on Jeff Gordon in the John Bickford maintained No. 16 Stanley.

Of course, Jeff went on to continue to astound the fans and other drivers alike moving through up to the full-sized Midgets, then to Sprint Cars and on.  Jeff Gordon is currently one of the most successful Drivers in NASCAR, taking the title in 1996. 1997 and again most recently in 1998, a "threepeat".
