Racing Is A Family Sport!

Contrary to what may be a commonly held belief, open wheel auto racing is a fine family sport, it has bound generations of families to a shared activity fmlysprt.jpg (7603 bytes)with a common element, excitement.

This team sport provides differing activities, levels of involvement for many family members.  One member may race, another might engineer while yet another records statistics and so on.

This builds further on family communication, trust, spirit, pride and cooperation, while having a great time.  It certainly provides for some lively dinner conversations.  It  is very exciting for many people and is no longer a "mans" sport, boys, girls and women freely participate.   Check this family's story!

With Open Wheel Racing There Are Various Classes & Age Groups
The examples given here are as they are predominate
on the West Coast and in most of the U.S.A.

With Quarter Midgets one can began driving at the very early of age 5 up through 16.  Ages 8 through 13 may race Box Stocks, which are like go-karts with a roll cage and a sprint car style body powered by stock 5h.p. Briggs/Stratton engines, may be one transition.  Or the next step up might be into a Junior Sprints which are a bit larger and are powered by a 100c.c. modified motorcycle engines, ages 8 through 11.

When a bit more mature Modified Midgets may be a more suitable.  Modified Midgets generally race on 1/8 mile tracks like the Prairie City SVRA Speedway in Sacramento Co.  At these races you might see three categories of Modified Midgets, known as Micro-midgets, these all utilize modified motorcycle engines. mnsprnts.jpg (8368 bytes)

There is a 125c.c. Class for ages 12 & 13.  Then those fourteen & up can participate in the 250c.c. and 600c.c. Classes. There is no maximum age in any of the Modified Midget classes, you will find a number of adults drive in all classes, both men and women

1,200 and 1,600 cc.

In all remaining step up classes you must be 16 years or older.  USAC still has a TQ Midget Class, Three Quarter Midgets use 750c.c. engines and race on 1/4 mile tracks.

rlrbkang.jpg (5391 bytes)A newer Class, gaining rapid popularity, to consider are Midget Lites, or Mini Sprints, these identical chassis are powered by 1200c.c. modified motorcycle engines  These cars are about the same size as full-size midget racers, the type of cars Tony Stewart and Billy Boat stepped up into the IRL and NASCAR from.

BCRA, Midget Lites, run top wings only, allow intense engine modifications and run on alcohol fuel.  Northern Stars Tour Mini Sprints can have top and front wings, they keep costs down by allowing; mild engine modifications only, use gasoline as fuel, without bladder fuel tanks.

Midget Lites/Mini Sprints generally run on 1/4 mile tracks, often performing as part of full-size Midget and Sprint Car events and with events of their own.  These races are on a professional level of competition and these events pay out purse money.  This a relatively cost effective way to experience real racing, race to win!

glnslds.jpg (10348 bytes)If you want more horsepower and desire to compete on a higher professional level try full-size Midgets.  You may have seen the exciting USAC Midgets on ESPN, TNN or live.

The larger Sprint Cars are wildly exciting and powerful whether running 360 or 410 cubic inch engines.  The 410 cubic inch World of Outlaws Sprints are especially popular, they have some strong events which pay $100,000 to win!

Finally, USAC Silver Crown Sprints, and then rear-engine CART and IRL Indy Cars round things out in the world of American grown open-wheel racing.  If variety is the spice of life, these forms of racing are sizzling hot!

As seen there are now numerous racing variations available for your interest, participation and enjoyment, so find one tailored to your age, skill and pocketbook.  Safety should always be a top consideration.  When your family is involved you are especially concerned with safety, so secure the best equipment that money can buy!
